BECOME THAT YOU

The statement that the title of this post is in Pindar, Greek poet of the Antiquities Dad.
From a logical point of view, the phrase seems to have no sense. However, intuitively, we all realize what we can come to mean. However, the expression can lead to different interpretations. I state here that I interpret it means.
The idea of writing on this subject, I arrived a couple of days to realize that there are probably aspects of my personality that remain latent but not manifest in my life. Then I remembered this sentence, which for me is very evocative.
All life is a process of knowing ourselves. In fact, a good knowledge of our own being equivalent to possess wisdom. Thus, another maxim, also of ancient Greece, says: "Know thyself."
Man is the only animal who must strive to build itself. The other animals are content to your instincts, and instead the human being must make strenuous efforts to become a real person.
Following the appointments, the poet English Pedro Salinas says that "live, from the beginning, is separate." What we should separate over our lives? Everything that is not ours, that separates us from our true essence, our true personality.
This is the sense that you must have education, help the child grow directly from the point of being himself, and not what we wanted it to be.
One of the meanings of the word guardian is "rod or stick that is stuck at the bottom of a plant to keep it straight in its growth." Similarly, the guardian, the educator of a child, you must provide the right development of the learner.
It may be that our true self is buried under a lot of ideas, emotions, etc. So, be yourself, finally, be responsible for exposing his true self, just as a sculptor does a beautiful sculpture from a block of marble.
In order to better understand this post, I illustrate with an example, my own. In my case, I believe that within me there is an aggression to which I rarely indulge. We all have within us aggression and channel it appropriately to the outside is somewhat complicated. One of my tasks is therefore to learn to show the aggressiveness of a convenient and authentic.
So friend, always flowing with life and making efforts in the right way ... it becomes who you are!

NODAL POINT OF HAPPINESS (II)

the last entry said that the nodal point of happiness is that level of happiness that we tend, with some (not all, of course) independence from the circumstances. That nodal point depends on aspects of our personality that supposedly are set at the end of the adolescent stage.
Here I want to try the alleged stability of personality traits that influence our capacity for happiness.
personality traits, by definition, have some stability across adulthood. These features depend of these factors: Genetic factors
 1. .
 2. environmental factors of our early childhood (0 to 6 years).
 3. environmental factors of childhood and adolescence (age 6 to late teens).
The real question is whether a person knowingly and willingly, is capable of modifying these personality traits. That is, can we make significant changes to our personality? Can we make these changes impact on our level of happiness?
Keep in mind that behind every feature of our underlying personality specific neural structures, physical structures have been strengthened over time.
However, the answer to both questions is yes, human beings can alter their brain (the physical structures in it), thus changing the traits of his personality, which in turn vary the nodal point happiness.
In the West it was thought that this was very easy to do, it was enough to appeal to reason to bring about the changes we want in our way of being. And this is wrong. For some reason we can not perform many of the changes that we are interested to lead a better life. A mere voluntarism is often not enough.
The verification of this fact will tell Ovid: "I see the best and I approve, but I the worst. "
Today we know that we can change, but is not as easy as it looked. We should not appeal only to reason. We treat the deeper layers of the human brain. Thus, only through constant practice of mental discipline will achieve our goals.
Scientists have been studying the technique especially mental meditation, concluding that people who meditate with perseverance they themselves generate in specific brain anatomy, with the brain regions responsible for emotional regulation largest and active in people who do not meditate. Through meditation
find a way to "distract the mind of an obsessive search for solutions to pain and sense of threat," avoiding the "storm of thoughts and images that act adding even more stress by trying to constantly search for solutions that do not find" (quotes from book "emotional self-control techniques" ).
conclusion, that we can change, but this is not enough to appeal to reason and will.

NODAL POINT OF HAPPINESS (I)

highly recommend reading the book by Sharon Begley entitled "Train your mind, change your brain" , I find the concept of nodal point of happiness.
The idea of the nodal point of happiness is to read as follows: each of us has a nodal point of happiness itself. If we imagine that our level of happiness can be measured on a scale of 1 to 10, we could say that Pepe has a nodal point of happiness 3 and Ana has a nodal point of happiness 8.
This means that if Pepe, that in our imaginary scale has a level 3, you win the lottery, their happiness is likely to increase temporarily until higher levels, a level of happiness say 6 or 7, say. However, as time goes on, the happiness level of Pepe back down, about level 3 has party.
intervene now in the life of Ana, this time with an event (an event) negative. Say Ana loses one of his best friends in an accident. Ana, which starts with a level of happiness "structural" 8, will be reduced in a "cyclical" their level of happiness to, say, a level of 3 or 4. However, over time, their happiness will increase to close to a level close to the original, or 8.
Although it is an idea that I think is not widespread, is not what happens to us but how we interpret what happens to us. Nodal point of happiness high ensures that our interpretation of what happens to us will be positive, and our ability to remake the setbacks of life will be high.
The importance of this concept of nodal point of happiness is that an individual does not have to worry so much about the circumstances that surround and surround in the future life as by the level of happiness tends spontaneously.
This nodal point of happiness is characterized by stability, shaping our affective style, ie how we respond to events of life. This stability of the nodal point is true at least since we reach adulthood. However, a happy childhood does not guarantee a happy adult, or an unhappy childhood leads us into adulthood unhappy.
But by adulthood the nodal point of happiness (our affective style, whether positive or negative) is stabilized. Thus, a stronger person able to weather almost any event taking place in your life, while a weak person, however well you go in life, you will find many difficulties in achieving an acceptable level of happiness.
In other words, the luck in the daily life has little importance compared to how lucky we were when "shared" the different nodal points of happiness among all human beings. Thus, as Goethe says, the greatest luck is personality.
But fortunately, according scientific studies have been completed on the subject, the nodal point is not as stable (and even immovable) as previously thought. On this attempt the second part of this issue.
